James Dalrymple (May 1619 - 29 November 1695)
Created Viscount of Stair by King William in 1690.
John Dalrymple (1648 - 8 January 1707)
Created 1st Earl of Stair in 1703. Now remembered for his part in the infamous massacre of Glencoe.
John Dalrymple (1673-1747)
2nd Earl of Stair. Field-marshal ambassador in Paris (1715-1720), and, besides seeing service under Marlborough, He had no son, and in 1707 had selected his nephew John (1720-1789) as heir to the title, but through a decision of the House of Lords in 1748 he only became 5th Earl, after his cousin James and James's son had succeeded as 3rd and 4th Earls.

Sir Hew Dalrymple (1652 - 1737)
Lord North Berwick, (third son of James Dalrymple), was created a baronet on Nova Scotia in 1698. By 1694 Sir Hew Dalrymple took over the heritable debts of the estate and in 1699 purchased Tantallon Castle and later the Bass Rock from the Crown

David Dalrymple, Lord Hailes (28 October 1726 – 29 November 1792)
Scottish advocate, judge and historian, was born at Edinburgh. His father, Sir James Dalrymple, Bart., of Hailes, in the county of Haddington, auditor-general of the exchequer of Scotland, was a grandson of James, first Viscount Stair;
Alexander Dalrymple (24 July 1737 – 19 June 1808)
A Scottish geographer and the first hydrographer of the British Admiralty. He was the brother of Scottish judge and earl, David Dalrymple.
